I am Susie.
I have been interested in Photography for a long time, but it wasn’t until I had my children and I had the obvious objects for my photography constantly around me, that I really got into it and tried to learn.
At the time I lived in London, England and started a 3-year photography course part-time at college. These were the days of B&W darkroom photography, before anyone really had taken to digital photography. I was mesmerised by the whole development process and the craftsmanship and the art form that photography really is. I could spend hours in there, completely losing track of time. It was a tricky and time consuming handiwork, and often after several hours of tweaking and experimenting you didn’t reach the desired result anyway………… far from the “click-of-a-button” effects we have now in the digital era!
I could not, however, resist the temptation, and eventually tried out digital photography, and the fact that you do not have to handle all the chemicals and breathe in the fumes but are comfortably seated at your desk in front of your big screen won me over!
By then, we had moved to Taipei, Taiwan. Word soon got around that I was really into photography and I subsequently got the chance to be the in-house photographer for an English-speaking magazine in Taipei. I took care of the photography for a couple of events and after some time I was assigned to take care of the food photography for the American Club; a leisure and social club in Taipei.
To learn more of the technical side of digital photography and learn to work better in Photoshop, I took a course at the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP).
I must admit that I have been, and I guess always will be, mostly interested in the artistic side of photography, rather than the technical side. Today when I see the young “tech guys” who know so much about their equipment and how to use it, I sometimes feel at a disadvantage, and you really are, if you do not keep up with the ever-faster technical development of photography. I am trying to keep up!
Since 2010 we live just outside Lausanne, Switzerland. This is a completely different life from our life in Asia, and after a hiatus in my “photography career”, I am now trying to get back to making photography a dominant part of my life, very much supported by my family.
In November 2019 I held my first proper photographic exhibition at Hayden-Wilson Gallery in Riex, Lausanne, Switzerland. It was a fantastic experience with a great turnout!
